WebIf *I* were going in December, I think I'd fly to Anchorage for a couple of days (the drive an hour south of there is extremely beautiful, summer or winter, and you could maybe do a snowmobile tour and/or skiing in Girdwood). Then take the train (it's reportedly a lovely trip in winter) or fly to Fairbanks and rent another car there for day trips.
