In hydrology, stemflow is the flow of intercepted water down the trunk or stem of a plant. Stemflow, along with throughfall, is responsible for the transferral of precipitation and nutrients from the canopy to the soil. In tropical rainforests, where this kind of flow can be substantial, erosion gullies can form at the base of the trunk. However, in more temperate climates stemflow levels are low and have little erosional power. WebThey concluded that stemflow has an important role in soil water and nutrient enrichment at deeper soil profiles of the root zone in revegetated arid ecosystems. Stemflow amount varies with canopy structure, intensity and duration of rainfall, and rainfall amount.

WebJun 3, 2024 · Over a century of research has described fluxes of water and solutes along these “hydrologic highways”, yet little is known about their “traffic” – that is, the organisms and nonliving particulates frequently discarded from water samples after filtration in the lab. WebWater passing through the canopy can reach the forest floor after dripping from leaves and branches (through-fall) or flowing down the stems of trees (stemflow). The sum of throughfall and stemflow is called net or effective precipitation (Parker 1983). alibi.com film streaming vf

WebMay 27, 2024 · A portion of precipitation drains to the surface down plant stems, as “stemflow.” Although per observations to date, stemflow rarely represents >2% of gross precipitation in forests, it can result in larger water fluxes to near-stem soils that are hypothetically more important to roots.
