The manual should show you, and possibly advise on how tom preload them. In any case, the head needs to be clamped firmly to the column. However, that idea seems to have a lot bad aspects to it. My second thought is to use the I-beam as a guide rail. First, the typical mill-drill does already have a sort of "key" in the form of a rack, used for raising and lowering the head. The rack is generally free to rotate with the head, so it seems logical to simply pin the rack to the column.
